Freight profile

What moves in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania's freight economy is built around distribution to the Northeast megalopolis. The Harrisburg–Carlisle corridor along I-81 and the Lehigh Valley around Allentown are two of the densest warehouse concentrations in the country, positioned to reach New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington inside a day without paying the cost of being inside those metros.

Western Pennsylvania is a different economy — Pittsburgh's steel and industrial base, plus energy freight from the Marcellus region. The two halves of the state are separated by mountain grades and expensive turnpike miles, and they don't feed each other well.

Lanes

How we plan Pennsylvania

I-81 corridor

Harrisburg and Carlisle warehouses running north to New York and New England, south to Virginia and the Carolinas. The state's freight spine.

Lehigh Valley

Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton. E-commerce and retail distribution serving the New York and New Jersey metro without entering it.

Philadelphia and port

Port freight, food distribution and dense urban delivery. Tight docks, difficult access, appointment-driven.

Western PA

Pittsburgh steel, industrial and energy freight. Flatbed and step deck. Separate market from the east — don't assume you can bridge them cheaply.

Turnpike cost

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is among the most expensive toll roads in the country. It has to be in your cost per mile.

Equipment

What runs best here

Dry van and power only run the warehouse corridors, and drop trailer programs are common through Harrisburg and the Lehigh Valley — good territory for power only carriers.

Flatbed and step deck concentrate in the west around Pittsburgh steel and the Marcellus energy region. Box truck and straight truck freight is unusually available because so much Northeast delivery goes into locations a 53-footer cannot reach.

Base state compliance

Pennsylvania is a standard IFTA and IRP base state through PennDOT. Tolls are the line item carriers underestimate here — the Turnpike is expensive and mountain grades affect fuel economy on east–west runs. Price both in.

Answers

Truck dispatching in Pennsylvania — questions

Do you dispatch trucks in Pennsylvania?

Yes — the I-81 Harrisburg and Carlisle warehouse corridor, the Lehigh Valley, Philadelphia and port freight, and western Pennsylvania industrial lanes out of Pittsburgh. Power only is well supported in the eastern warehouse corridors.

Is the Pennsylvania Turnpike worth avoiding?

Sometimes. It's among the most expensive toll roads in the country, and on some east–west runs the alternative routing costs less than the toll even accounting for the extra time. We price the toll into the load when we negotiate rather than letting it come out of your margin quietly.

What's the difference between eastern and western Pennsylvania freight?

They're effectively separate markets. The east is distribution and warehousing serving the Northeast metros. The west is Pittsburgh steel, heavy industry and Marcellus energy freight, which suits flatbed and step deck. Mountain grades and turnpike costs between them mean you shouldn't assume you can move cheaply from one to the other.
